Spoil Island is a Success
Friday, February 20, 2004
APF
The Sarasota Herald-Tribune published an article on Friday, February 20th about the success of Port Manatee's Spoil Island. Spoil island was created in the late sixties from dredged materials that were removed to create shipping channels into Port Manatee. Over the years, the island was inundated with exotic and invasive plants. With funding from Gulf Stream Natural Gas, the island was cleared of all invasive plants.

Aquatic Plants of Florida was responsible for replanting over 180,000 native plants including a mangrove area, subtropical hammock, an upland planting area, and water retention basin. The planting was a success and has drawn in numerous shorebirds including rare oystercatchers who have chosen this site to nest.
